IEEE 1471 Standard on Architecture Views and Viewpoints

The IEEE Computer Society has developed the ‘IEEE-Std-1471-2000, Recommended Practice for Architectural Description of Software-Intensive Systems’.
This is an IEEE standard for organisations taking an ‘enterprise wide’ view of architecture, i.e. Enterprise Architecture.
The IEEE 1471 standard provides a conceptual framework and vocabulary for talking about architectural issues.

It is illustrated in the following meta model:

The IEEE Computer Society has developed the IEEE-Std-1471-2000, Recommended Practice for Architectural Description of Software-Intensive Systems.
The goal of IEEE 1471 is to:

  • Define a direction for incorporating architectural thinking into IEEE standards
  • Take a “wide scope” interpretation of architecture as applicable to software-intensive systems
  • Establish a conceptual framework and vocabulary for talking about architectural issues of systems
  • Identify and promulgate sound architectural practices
  • Allow for the evolution of those practices as relevant technologies mature

The IEEE 1471 standard defines Architecture as:

  • The fundamental organisation of a system embodied in its components, their relationships to each other and to the environment and the principles guiding its design and evolution.

This IEEE standard is applicable to an ‘enterprise wide’ view of architecture, i.e. Enterprise Architecture.
It provides a conceptual framework and vocabulary for talking about the Enterprise Architecture in the context of the EA repository.
The various Architecture Domains are the Views.
The various EA Diagrams are the viewpoints on the repository that address the concerns of stakeholders.
The Stakeholders include Enterprise Architect roles such as Process Architects, Application Architects, Information Architects, Technology Architects and Solution Architects..
