The best example of a Reference Architecture is the Federal Enterprise Architecture Reference Models.

FEAF Reference Models

There are 5 reference models:

• Performance Reference Model
• Business Reference Model
• Service Component Reference Model
• Data Reference Model
• Technical Reference Model

Because these reference models are business and service focused they provide a good basis for creating Service Categories for classifying Application Services, Infrastructure Services and Application Components.
The coverage of the categories is fairly complete.
